What is Cryolipolysis / Fat Freezing (Cryotherapy) and How Does It Work?
Technically referred to as Cryolipolysis though commonly known as ‘fat freezing’ or ‘Cryotherapy’, this aesthetic treatment is a popular non-invasive method used to reduce localised areas of body fat.
The procedure works by using a controlled cooling technique to freeze and destroy fat cells without damaging the surrounding tissue.
The process of Fat Freezing starts with identifying the area of the body that needs to be treated, then the careful placement of a gel pad which is applied directly onto the skin. This is quickly followed by attaching the applicator vaccumhead. The applicator then delivers controlled cooling to the underlying fat cells, for an average of 45 minutes. The new 2023 machine can go down to -15c (we’ll touch on this a bit further down the page) but essentially it is set to a temperature that is cold enough to freeze the fat cells, but not too cold to cause damage to the various layers of the skin or other tissues.
As the fat cells are exposed to the cold temperature, a process called apoptosis is triggered, which causes the cells to break down and die. These destroyed fat cells are then naturally eliminated from the body over the coming weeks through the lymphatic drainage system.

Now into our 12th year of this treatment and with the 5th generation of this technology, we can say with the utmost confidence that NOW is the time to have this procedure.
This was the treatment that started it all for us back in 2013. Over the years there have been many technological progressions on how to get the most out of ‘Fat Freezing’ and we’ve had all of them. As a clinic we were the first to take on this procedure outside of Harley Street. Having spent the previous decade (2003 – 2013) in health and fitness, this treatment acted as the ‘bridge’ whereby our previous knowledge and expertise worked in perfect sync with a procedure that was focused entirely on Fat Reduction/ body contouring. We are still to this day the only clinic that takes a ‘lifestyle and holistic’ approach to the treatment; coupled with the science led diagnostic body fat equipment (InBody 270) we are proud to offer a fully comprehensive service giving superior results.
This is the treatment which has had our lion’s share of attention over the years and is the procedure that we are most well known for. As of Autumn/ Winter 2024/25, we have performed over 5500 Fat Freezing procedures and have featured in various paper and magazine articles.
Is Now The Time For Cryotherapy?
The non-invasive aesthetics industry is mostly technology led so the efficacy and results of the treatment will (most of the time & in the right hands) be down to the piece of equipment or machine(s) being used.
Fat freezing or to give its correct name, Cryolipolysis (originating from Cryotherapy) has undergone its biggest innovative leap since its inception to the market back in 2012.
Now, before August 2020 all the previous machines featured adjacent metal freezing plates inside the suction cups, these older machines were packaged up to promote the treatment in slightly different ways but names you may be familiar with are: Cool sculpting by Zeltic, Lipoglaze by Amabelle (formally LoveLite), any 3D Aesthetics machine (formally 3D Lipo), AW3 Cryo machine and the Lipocontrast machine, just to name a few.
To be clear we’re not bad mouthing these machines, as we’ve also had them at some point over the last 11 years. This is because that was as advanced as the technology was at that moment in time, however, as we’ve said, times move on.
2020 saw the arrival of the ISO Cryo 360 (4th generation technology) which simply meant the entire cup was a frozen piece and not just the internal plates. This had worked well for us from 2020 – 2022 as it came with various interchangeable applicator plates which meant we could treat more ‘difficult to reach’ areas (inner knees, bra line) with more accuracy and precision.
Is The Latest Fat Freezing/Cryotherapy Machine Different To Everything Before?
We are excited to welcome you now to the 5th generation of Fat Freezing; the Diamond ICE 360. This is the biggest leap in technology the industry has ever seen, almost to the point where its a completely different procedure. Think box convex television to 4K plasma, both of which are still televisions but of very different times.
Now, the reason for this is that the new machine features a full-face rubber and silicone compound suction cup. There are 7 different applicator shapes and heads to use, one of which is modelled specifically to fit the full coverage of someone’s inner thigh or upper hamstring. The stomach treatment head is also 2.5 times the size of the previous model. The machine can go down to -15c if needed which is 10 degrees lower than what was commonly done before, the reason for this is that due to the rubber and silicone compound (with pressure and thermo sensors) we don’t have to worry about cold injury or any cold related adverse reaction that you would get with metal freezing. Treatment time is 45 minutes on average and we can near on guarantee at least 30% reduction from the fat that goes into the suction cup. Result window is also shortened to 2 – 6 weeks.
In a way it’s finally become the procedure that it always had the potential to be, and more to the point, it’s become the treatment that the general public always wanted it to be.

Results are usually seen 3-9 weeks after your fat freezing treatment, although we have seen near full results in 4 weeks before (mostly with the under-30s).
We book all clients in for post measurement appointments at the 4 and 8 week mark to run a bio impedance check on our state of the art InBody 270 machine. (Body fat, BMR, Protein, Salt and Water content & Segmental fat analysis).
We also take pictures to ensure we have a full suite of data to help us monitor your results.
The 8 week mark is when we can determine if another treatment is needed or would be beneficial.
Cryotherapy (Fat Freezing) is a permanent procedure, it is one of the few Aesthetic treatments that can boast this, The cells cannot re-inflate once the treatment has been performed.

We have been at our ‘Medical Aesthetics’ premises since 2013. We are located just Palmeira Sq in Hove, Sussex. Parking is pay and display outside and shouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes to find somewhere, pay and then get to us. If you are coming from outside of Sussex/ Surrey, as many do, please allow time for this.
As of late 2024 we have been doing this treatment (in its various technological evolutions and as mentioned above) for 12 years. In this time, we are pleased to say that we have not experienced any adverse reactions or side effects from the treatment. We are currently around the 5500 treatment mark, give or take a couple.
There have been 5 evolutions of the technology since 2013 with each bringing an increase in comfort, improved results and more variations in the treatment cup size. 2023 saw the arrival of Diamond ICE 360 in which the entire treatment cup is a frozen piece made from silicone and ceramic with real time bio temperature sensors to track and maintain the temperature of fat freezing. This move away from ‘metal freezing’ ensures that there can be no real harm caused to the skin, basically this means it’s a massive leap forward from what was done before.
Any after affects will be short lived but can be 1 or more of the following:
- Redness
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Numbness
There is no ‘magic wand’ and nor will there be, when it comes to spot reduction of body fat in a specific area, this is the closest to such a tool that there currently is.
Is it painful?
The large majority of non-invasive Aesthetic procedures tend to be ‘pain free’. Fat Freezing used to be much more uncomfortable a few years back on the older machines (Cool Sculpting, 3D Lipo, Lipocontrast etc) but since 2023 when the Diamond ICE 360 came out, Fat Freezing has evolved to become much more tolerable, people normally always say ‘is that it? I was expecting much worse…’
In the real world what does that mean?
You’ll feel a pinch at the start, you’ll then feel the drop in temperature which will feel slightly ‘odd’. Around 5 minutes it will go numb and you wont really feel anything until the treatment ends and the suction cup is taken away. At this point your skin will be a touch red, numb to the touch for a few minutes until it warms back up. Within 10 – 15 minutes later, you wont really know you had it done.
You may feel bruised for a couple of days to follow, which more often than not will not be visible as it is bruising under the skin. Again this will subside within a day or two.
Downtime?
In theory you could go from the clinic to the gym, there is nothing from a rest stand point that needs to be adhered too. Point being, your day can continue as planned.
We have restructured our pricing for 2024 on this treatment, contrary to many other clinics we’ve actually reduced the cost. We’ve been able to do this due to us having a direct relationship with the manufacturer of both the Diamond ICE 360 Fat Freezing machines and the protective membranes used for the procedure.
