We’re sure that many of you will be aware of, ‘LED phototherapy’, due to its heavy promotion from celebrities who love to show off the truly incredible results the treatment offers. And, of course, both of those reasons have cemented its popularity within the Aesthetics’ industry.
However, have you ever wondered how emitting light onto the face can treat your skin concern/condition?
Let’s look at all of the aspects of LED light therapy; how is works, what it is, and why you need it ASAP.
“One of the reasons we LOVE this treatment is because you can come in for a 20-minute nap whilst the light works its magic on your skin…”
Here comes the science…
Fun Fact: NASA originally developed LED phototherapy for plant growth experiments on shuttle missions and later found it to have promise for wound treatment!
Phototherapy (exposure to light) occurs naturally everyday i.e. sun exposure. However, as we all know, ongoing sun exposure can be very damaging to the skin!
Now, LED light therapy uses the same principle as UV (sun) light, but it works differently…
Our skin cells absorb light then, when radiation reaches the skin it can either be reflected, or it can penetrate the tissue and be absorbed, or even scattered in various directions.
The subsequent fate of this radiation in the body depends on the wavelength of the absorbed light and under natural circumstances, that is out of our control; with different wavelengths radiating from the sun on different days and in different locations.
Note: UV rays mainly absorb the water within the skin and cause an increase in melanin production. They also cause a chemical reaction within the skin to cause either direct or indirect damage to proteins and DNA i.e. skin ageing, cancer. The takeaway from this? ALWAYS WEAR AN SPF!
LED phototherapy on the other hand, uses the same delivery system as UV light but different wavelengths for different reasons, and all of which are controlled.
The Power of Light
Like we have all heard, sun light is good for skin conditions but as you cannot control it then you could be causing as many problems as you are solving. On the contrary, the LED Light Therapy process harnesses the benefits of light without the damage and is clinically proven to treat a variety of skin concerns safely.
Skin cells that are energised by not just by light but by LED light therapy function better and can regenerate up to 200% faster which in turn leads to a more youthful, healthy, and radiant complexion.
The 3 clinically proven wavelengths and what they treat
Clear skin with Blue Light:
The blemish fighting blue light destroys the bacteria which causes spots and helps in the prevention of breakouts.
How? Well, exposure to Blue light at the correct distance of 415nm, interacts with bacteria found in the skin, creating a photodynamic reaction which results in bacterial destruction. It also helps to balance sebum production and improve skin clarity.
The top benefits of LED Light Facials with Blue Light
- Blemish fighting action without irritation
- Helps spot prone skin
- Balances oil production
- Improves skin clarity
Rejuvenate skin with Red Light:
The rejuvenating Red light accelerates cell renewal and repair, boosting collagen and elastin synthesis for smoother firmer skin.
Exposure to Red light at the correct distance, 633nm, is clinically proven to increase the body’s natural form of cellular energy (ATP) which in turn “kick starts” cells to regenerate faster.
The red light is potently absorbed by fibroblasts increasing collagen and elastin synthesis and boosting natural hydration levels. It also improves blood flow for increased tissue oxygenation and the lymphatic systems to eliminate toxins. Red light offers immediate visible results; skin feels hydrated and plump and radiance is restored.
The top benefits of LED Light Facials with Red Light
- Increases collagen and elastin synthesis
- Reduces fine lines
- Improves complexion, texture, and tone
- Increases natural hydration
- Stimulates circulation and lymphatic system
- Revitalises and restores radiance
Repair skin with Near Infrared Light:
The repairing Near Infrared light is the most deeply absorbed wavelength and works synergistically with Red light to incorporate rejuvenation results too.
Exposure to Near Infrared light at the correct distance of 830nm, triggers the skins anti-inflammatory processes to accelerate repair and reduce irritation and redness. Near Infrared light builds strength and integrity for compromised, environmentally damaged and sensitive skin conditions. It is also clinically effective in the treatment of age spots and hyperpigmentation.
The top benefits of LED Light Facials with Near Infra Red Light
- Relieves redness, irritation, and allergic reactions
- Reduces pigmentation
- Promotes healthy skin
- Ideal for the most sensitive skins
